Built in 1563, The Old Church is the only surviving Elizabethan church in London, making it one of the oldest Anglican church buildings with no previous Roman Catholic history. Queen Elizabeth I is believed to have visited Stoke Newington as a guest of John Dudley, the first Earl of Leicester. While it is uncertain if she worshipped at The Old Church, her visit is commemorated in the naming of Queen Elizabeth’s Walk north of Clissold Park.
Historical Significance
The church is historically significant due to its association with the 1807 Slave Trade Abolition Act. William Wilberforce, a key figure in the abolition movement, expressed a wish to be buried there, although he was ultimately interred in Westminster Abbey. His sister, daughter, and brother-in-law, James Stephen, an advisor on the Act, are buried at The Old Church. The poet Anna Barbauld and her brother John Aitken, also advocates for abolition; rest here as well.
Architectural Heritage and Community Role
The church's south aisle, originally built as a private chapel for William Patten, Lord of the Manor of Stoke Newington, remains intact with its English-bonded red brickwork. The sixteenth-century vestry still features benches used for parish meetings. The Old Church has seen several renovations, including repairs in 1891, electric lighting installation in 1911, and new furnishings between 1929 and 1933. It continued to be used actively alongside the New Church, consecrated in 1858. Today, The Old Church is a consecrated space used for Sunday services and functions as a not-for-profit community arts and performance venue.
